Types of Ophthalmic Lenses:
Single Vision - Correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. One single optical prescription correction distributes focus evenly over entire surface area of lens.
Lined Bifocal - Two noticeable lines separating the different fields of vision within the lens surface. A slight adjustment to the angle of the head allows wearers to choose which lens area to look through based on the distance of the object they're trying to see.
Progressive (No Line Bifocal) - Multifocal with three prescriptions in one pair of lenses. They allow the wearer to see comfortably at different distances, up close, near, or far without changing glasses.
Lined Trifocal - Lens with three reading areas that are separated by a visible line. Creates three viewing areas to see at different distances, up close, near, or far.
Lens Materials:
Plastic - Plastic lenses are one of the most commonly prescribed due to their comfort, durability, and impact resistance. This lightweight material has excellent optics and and is best suited for mild or minimal prescriptions
Polycarbonate - Thinner and lighter than plastic, polycarbonate (impact-resistant) lenses are shatter-proof and provide 100% UV protection, making them the optimal choice for kids and active adults. They’re also ideal for strong prescriptions since they do not add thickness when correcting vision, minimizing any distortion.
Hi-index - This hi-tech plastic lens is designed for people with stronger prescriptions. Vision can be corrected with less material, making the lens much thinner, lighter, and more comfortable for long-term wear.
Trivex® - Similar to polycarbonate, Trivex lenses are thin, lightweight, impact-resistant, and provide 100% UV protection. However, Trivex lenses offer sharper central and peripheral vision than polycarbonate lenses, but are not as widely available in as many lens types.
Lens Enhancement Options:
Anti-glare coatings - Increase clarity and reduce glare from reflections, and the "halos" you see around lights at night, with an anti-glare (or anti-reflective, AR) coating. It reduces eye strain and protects your lenses from scratches and smudges.
Transitions - Get the visual clarity of prescription lenses with the comfort and protection of outdoor lenses. Transition lenses stay clear indoors and at night but quickly darken in sunlight. They also provide 100% UV protection and targeted blue light reduction.
Blue Light Protection - Combat digital eye strain by reducing your exposure to blue light from smartphones, tablets, computer screens, televisions, energy-efficient lighting, and the sun.
Anti-fog coating - Ultra-thin layer prevents water droplets produced by trapped humidity from forming fog on rear lens surfaces, this coating helps eyeglass wearers maintain performance-critical clear vision.
Polarization - A virtually invisible filter can be built into lenses to eliminate the amount of reflecting light that enters the eye. Polarized lenses not only reduce glare, they make images appear sharper and clearer, increasing visual clarity and comfort.
